What Is A LOLER Inspection?

Any equipment used for lifting or lowering loads must be compliant with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER). In order to be compliant, LOLER regulations require lifting equipment used to lift goods to be carried out annually. Any equipment designed for lifting people, however, require twice-yearly inspections. Equipment requiring visual examination include passenger lifts and mobility lifting aids, goods lifts, escalators and other lifting accessories.

Who Can Carry Out LOLER Inspections?

The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) state that the competent person carrying out LOLER inspections must be “sufficiently independent and impartial to allow objective decisions to be made”.

It is your responsibility to ensure that an independent and impartial LOLER Inspection can be carried out. The examination must also not be carried out by anyone who undertakes regular maintenance of equipment to prevent the assessment of their own work. 

As a LOLER Inspection company that does not provide maintenance works to our clients, we are well placed to adhere to LOLER’s regulations, remaining independent and impartial in our examinations.

Our lifting equipment tests include the issuing of a LOLER certificate once we are confident any equipment complies with regulations.

Your LOLER Inspection

In general, if the equipment lifts people or directly attaches a load (such as lifting tackle) then it requires an inspection every six months. Most other lifting equipment will require an inspection once a year. However, there can be exceptions to the rule so do get in touch with our team if you are unsure or in need of advice.

The Testing Process

After carrying out a full assessment of risk, we will determine whether LOLER Testing is required. We take all information into account during a Thorough Examination, including data from the manufacturer in order to establish whether a LOLER test is required.

From there, we identify and specify the methods of testing and the intervals of examination and testing, where relevant. We also offer LOLER Testing as a stand-alone service, in conjunction with a thorough inspection from another competent party.
